What Are Power Tools

A power tool is a tool that is actuated by an additional power source and mechanism other than the solely manual labor used with hand tools. The most common types of power tools use electric motors.

Important Features of Power Tools

User-friendly

As it is not their official job, they are to use less complicated and simple devices that they don't need a lot of experience to apply properly. Being handy, ergonomic, and compact are the other features that make a power tool a great option for amateurs and home users.

Compact and Easy to Store

Storing tools on home shelves can be challenging if they are not compact and lightweight enough to be easily placed. So, the most workable ones for home use applications are the storable ones.

Affordable

Nobody resists a high-quality and affordable product. But when it comes to people who occasionally work with tools, the factor of reasonability is more important. Because usually, they do not have the financial support of a company to pay high expenses. So, if you do not need them for heavy-duty uses, consider the prices and quality at the same time.

Safe

The tools used for work around the house need to be very safe. Casual users might not have the necessary skills to use them effectively, therefore the gadgets they use should include cutting-edge safety features to keep them away from potential dangers. because they typically do their business in homes rather than on industrial job sites, which are outfitted with security measures.

Types of Power Tools

Much like everything else in the world, power tools have certainly evolved over the years. No longer do you have to clunk around your garage with a sander bigger than your torso for that new shelf finish, simply go wireless! Let's get to know the various types of power tools available today.

Electric Power Tools

Electric power tools are those that are portable. Typically for home use, these are the most wanted and accessible to the average Joe looking for home DIY power tools. These cordless tools are given power through an electric motor used for the machining of materials. Electric power tools use battery platform systems to manage the rechargeable batteries by monitoring its state, protecting the battery, controlling its environment, and/or balancing it. Basically, protecting the tool from volt damage.

Cordless power tools include:

1)Drill
2)Impact driver
3)Hammer drill
4)Reciprocating saw

Corded Power Tools

Corded power tools give you consistent and immense power. Much better suited to those who need to perform heavy projects, they'll benefit from using corded tools which, have the ability to exert immense force.
Types of corded power tools:

1)Hand Power Tools-Handheld power tools are more commonly found in the average home of a DIY enthusiast or a handyman. A few examples of these are: angle grinder, sander, power saw, drills
2)Stationary Power Tools-Stationary power tools are typically found in a shop or garage, within a fixed location. Examples of these include: table saw, miter saws, sanders, band saws.

Pneumatic Power Tools

These power tools are ones that are powered by compressed air. Pneumatic tools pair with a compressor which forces air through the tool to drive its action. Typically, these power tools are used heavily in shop environments to power impact wrenches, polishers, snips, grinders, nail guns and hammers.

Gas Power Tools

Gas tools are more often found in the outdoor power tool space. A few examples of gas power tools include:

1)Chainsaws

2)Lawnmowers

3)Trimmers

4)Tillers

5)Augers

Better Performance

Often, power tools can perform tasks that are impossible for hand tools to complete. For example, electric power tools make it possible to work with rigid materials like metals or concrete. Some power tools have a specialized design intended to serve highly specific functions or work with certain materials. Many power tools have a range of adjustable settings to enable better control for more involved tasks. Finally, power tools perform the same functions as hand tools with significantly less effort and energy, leaving you with more energy at the end of the day.

Speed and Efficiency

Electric power tools may ultimately not only produce better results than hand tools, but they also complete the same tasks in significantly less time. Consider that a power drill can complete a task in minutes that might take you hours with a manual hammer and nails. Some power tools even include features that reduce human error, providing consistency and efficiency that helps speed up projects. For example, some drills come with a clutch feature that helps prevent stripping of screws, which saves the time necessary to replace them. With tools that perform faster, you can give more of your focus to important tasks and make more progress in the same amount of time.

Precision and Accuracy

Sometimes you need a precise and powerful tool to make a straight cut in a length of wood at the right angle or to drill a hole in a slab of concrete at exactly the right depth. With greater power, consistency and adaptability, electric power tools can perform tasks with greater accuracy. Table saws, for instance, let you achieve a smooth, straight cut at precisely the angle you need, even when working with tough materials. It's also possible to transport a table saw to a work site when the job calls for a high volume of cutting. For a more portable and versatile option, look at handheld electric saws. These tools combine power with precision and allow you to perform fine-detail work even in cramped spaces. Power sanders in particular offer highly accurate results that would take incredible patience and stamina to achieve by hand.

Convenience

When put together, the many qualities of electric tools serve to provide a simple commodity: convenience. A large percentage of power tools are portable, which lets you transport them to any job site. Handheld electric tools are versatile and perform well in hard-to-reach spots, making jobs in cramped spaces much easier. With a tool that performs tasks quickly and precisely, you can conserve valuable time and energy and move on to the next task, getting more done in a short amount of time. Electric power tools are an excellent addition to workspaces like garages, and they offer a quicker, cleaner and less troublesome alternative to hand tools and allow you to finish the same tasks with less mess and less hassle.

How to Use an Angle Grinder
1. Cutting Metal, Aluminium and Steel with an Angle Grinder

Metal is a hard material. You can use it for all kinds of metal, including bolts, pipes, iron, steel and sheet metal. You'll need to use an abrasive metal-cutting disc. Secure the disc on the grinder and place the metal on a flat surface. Secure it well on the surface with a C-clamp.
Mark a line where you're going to cut with a marker. Put on the protective gear, including the gloves. Start cutting the metal with light pressure. Position the grinder and move slowly through the metal. The cutting disc is thin, so pressing too hard may result in kickbacks.
If you're cutting steel, after you're done, remove the metal-cutting disc and use a flapper disc along the edge of the steel to smooth it out.

2. Cutting Concrete, Pavers and Stone with an Angle Grinder

Concrete is hard and thick and produces a lot of dust and fumes during the cut. To reduce the grime, you can wet the material before the cutting.
Segmented rim discs are specially designed for concrete. They have toothed blades that help extrude the dust and cool down the blade with airflow. Overheating the blade may result in damage and safety hazards. With segmented rim blades, you can also cut bricks, masonry, pavers, granite and limestone.

3. Cutting Wood with an Angle Grinder

The angle grinder is a great tool to cut, carve, sand and shape wood. The grinder comes with a lot of discs designed specifically for processing wood. Consider how much wood you want to remove and how fast to define the correct cutting disc for your needs.
There are two main types of blades for cutting wood:
1)Abrasive flap blades-This blade is created by a lot of small pieces of sanding paper glued to the side of the disc, forming a bumpy surface. This type of grinder is used for sanding wood.
2)Abrasive carving blades-This blade is formed by sharp, little teeth positioned at the end of the disc. It can be used for shaping and carving wood into furniture and big or small wooden sculptures.

Must-Have Power Tools for Beginners
1

Cordless Power Drill / Driver (+ Bit Kit) A cordless drill / driver is something every household should have. Besides using it as a screwdriver, or for drilling holes of every size, you may discover there are other uses. With the right bit, you can mix concrete or paint, sand surfaces, grind metal, remove rust, and more!
This is an important starter tool for your woodworking projects, and while you could get a corded drill, why not make life simpler by going battery powered?

2

Sander When I first started, my cheap self-thought I would just sand by hand and save a few bucks. It turns out, you can save more by buying an inexpensive power sander, various grit sandpaper, and then go for budget-friendly wood rather than premium. BUT that definitely means more sanding in your future than you'll want to do manually.

3

Circular Saw Of all the cutting tools, a circular saw is probably the most versatile. It is easily mobile, can cut a large range of size and type of wood, plus a variety of other materials. Let's be honest, it is probably the scariest tool any beginner will handle, but once you've learned to safely manage a circular saw, your confidence will soar!
Use a circular saw with a jig to help maintain accuracy of cuts, and you can do a LOT with it.

4

Sliding Miter Saw If you can buy this power tool right at the outset, it is worth buying! Especially as a beginner. It's more convenient and accurate to use than a circular saw, and makes quick work of board and molding. Plus you can easily make beveled or angled cuts. Sure, you can't cut large sheets of plywood, but I actually use my miter saw more than any other cutting tool! It is the only cutting tool I use for my bookshelf builds, most furniture and craft projects, and molding. Plus I change out the saw blade to cut PVC pipe and softer metals for much of the metal work I do.

5

Cordless Nail Gun A hammer and nail just doesn't hold a candle to a cordless nailer. You'll save so much time and effort!

6

Jigsaw Although a jigsaw is in my add-on-later section, it was actually the first cutting tool I owned. I inherited one, and used it to cut a large variety of materials. The reason it was moved to the add-on section, is because a circular saw should probably be one of the first saws you own for the variety of board sizes it can cut. However, the jigsaw is going to be that tool you wish you had when you need to cut a hole in something, or you want to make a complex, or curved cut.

7

Cordless Multi Tool If you find yourself doing various renovation tasks, a multi-tool will help prevent many a headache. This is for those moments you are scratching your head wondering how to cut that pipe that is too close to the wall, or how to sand a hard to reach corner.

How To Properly Maintain Your Power Tools

01.Clean Regularly

To start with your maintenance practices, make sure to regularly clean your power tools after every use before putting them away. Cleaning is done with two simple tools: a cloth and a stiff brush. Use your cloth to wipe off dirt and other debris from the power tool’s exterior.
Use your brush to clean out the nooks and crannies, as well as the tool’s exhaust vent. When cleaning with a brush, the key is to use gentle motions, to avoid pushing debris further into the tool. If you prefer, you can also use compressed air to vent out dust and dirt from the tool instead.

02.Store Properly

After a thorough cleaning, you should make sure your storage system is correct for your power tool. A proper system consists of one or more of these items: toolboxes, containers, and shelving units.
Proper storage practices keep the tools protected from additional dust or damage, preserving their condition. Make sure your storage is in places that aren’t exposed to drastic temperatures either, as those can damage the casing and electronics of the power tool.

03.Maintain Sharpness and Calibration

Using worn parts for your power tools can put extra stress on its motor and moving parts — meaning that your tool will have to work even harder to get the job done. This can cause extra damage to other parts, which you want to avoid.

04.Lubricate Your Tool

Lubrication is also needed so that power tools can operate without too much friction. Without proper lubrication, there will be plenty of abrasion and scraping between moving parts, which will result in extensive wear and tear.

05.Inspect for Wear or Damage

If you use your power tools quite often, it can be easy to accidentally overlook certain details about them. You might not even notice that the performance has gradually gotten worse over time. This is a result of not inspecting the tools thoroughly before use.
It is important to regularly check over each part for wear or damage which could impair performance. Pay close attention to strange noises or smells coming from the instrument when in use. These are strong indicators that your power tool may need repair or replacement.

06.Check Batteries

Check your power tool’s batteries often. These batteries are expensive and can be damaged by overuse, overcharging, overheating, and many other causes. However, proper care can extend their life and ensure that they provide enough energy to power your tools at optimal levels.
